The general assembly of the 19th Meeting of Parties of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) held on 8 July 2022 decided to set up a task force to develop key elements for the political debate on a concept for long-term sustainable financing of ecological services of forests and peatlands in the Congo Basin – in line with the "COMIFAC Declaration" of September 2021 in Berlin.

This decision was based on a proposal by COMIFAC's President, Jules Doret NDongo, Secretary of State Jochen Flasbarth of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the Head of the French delegation Philippe Lacoste.

This proposal includes

• a medium to long-term vision on how to coordinate and implement the principle of sustainable financing of country policies and action programmes.
• a mechanism for a "Fair Deal" – permanent payment mechanisms for ecosystem services of Central African forests and their peatlands, which should facilitate the mobilisation of public, private and philanthropic funds, facilitate the absorption capacities, as well as modalities, and procedures for accessing and operating such funding.

This Fair Deal Task Force aims to link efforts of institutions within the sphere of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership that work independently on the same issues.
