Systematic approach to agroforestry policies and practices in Asia
Agroforestry is an intensive land management system involving the integration of tree management into crop and animal farming. It can provide diverse ecosystem goods and services by bridging agriculture, forestry and husbandry to offer environmental, economic, and social benefits from local to global scales. In order to improve the benefits of agroforestry systems to contribute to international climate, biodiversity and development goals, a systematic approach is necessary for understanding agroforestry practices, designing related policies and outcomes. Multiple methods, including tools such as systematic review and locally appropriate landscape restoration approaches can be applied to analyzing agroforestry policies and ecosystem services derived from agroforestry practices.
To this end, this side event focuses on systematic approaches to agroforestry policies, strategies, and practices in Asia. It includes case studies from several countries in the region to explore economic, social and environmental dimensions. Seoul National University and CIFOR propose a side event to explore climate smart agroforestry systems in South and Southeast Asia. The overall goal is to share experiences of agroforestry policies and practices in developing countries. The side event will host virtual and an on-location gathering of stakeholders to learn, share and collaboratively advance knowledge needed to support sustainable agroforestry. Presentations from representatives of key institutions involved in research on agroforestry will set the stage for facilitated discussion on conditions conducive to successful agroforestry practices. Participants will work collaboratively to identify factors and challenges that can influence agroforestry. By the end of the side event, participants will have better knowledge of agroforestry practices, which can be applied in their local context.
