CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Testing a conceptual model of soil emissions of nitrous and nitric oxides

In this article we briefly review the disciplinary research on soil emissions of N2O and NO. We describe a mechan i s ti c a lly based con ceptual model—the “h o l e - i n - t h e - pipe” (HIP) model (Firestone and Davidson 1989)—that integrates the results of these disciplinary studies and that relates emissions of both nitrogen oxides to common soil processes. We then test the model predictions using data from our recent studies in Costa Rica (Veldkamp et al. 1999) Brazil (Verchot et al.1999)and Puerto Rico (Erickson etal. in press) and additional data from the literature for forest ecosystems throughout the world.
