Fergus Sinclair, the Chief Scientist of CIFOR-ICRAF, will open the Science Week with introductory remarks to the partners attending Partner’s Day. He will also provide a brief explanation of the morning sessions to his CIFOR-ICRAF colleagues attending Science Week in Nairobi and other parts of the world. Additionally, he will provide insights into the significance of CIFOR-ICRAF’s research and development works in forests and agroforestry, globally and in Indonesia, including the two subsequent sessions on Trade and EU Deforestation-free regulation and Landscape restoration.

Wetlands ecosystems, including Peatlands and mangroves are among carbon-rich ecosystems that experience tremendous pressures of conversions for other uses. Restoring these ecosystems is crucial to abate climate change and sea level rise. The mitigation and adaptation measure should be seen as an opportunity to enhance livelihoods of local community.

The EU has issued a new law to prevent companies from placing commodities linked with deforestation and forest degradation, onto the EU market, or exporting them from the EU. The session will focus on navigating the EU’s new regulation, status quo, implication and the way forwards for global trade, environment and smallholder by bringing insights from the consumer and producer countries, CSOs (Civil Society Organizations) and research organizations. The session will highlight palm oil and timber as case studies.
