Athanase Mukuralinda is senior scientist and country representative for Rwanda. He has more than 20 years of experience in agroforestry. Athanase holds a PhD in Agroforestry and has research interests in management of soil fertility, agroforestry systems, production of quality seeds and seedlings, nutrient cycling in agroforestry systems and agroforestry extension. His research interest also focuses geographically on the Great Lakes region. He has conducted studies on tree-based value chains, supply systems for tree seeds and seedlings, bioenergy (charcoal and firewood), climate-smart agriculture and climate change. Other than research, Athahanse has been engaged in development and management of various national and regional projects including Sustainable Forestry, Agroforestry and Biomass Energy Management for Climate ResilienceTrees for Food Security (phases 1 and 2), Reversing Land Degradation in Africa by Scaling-up Evergreen Agriculture (Regreening Africa) and Harnessing the Potential of Trees on Farms for Meeting National and Global Biodiversity Targets. He is also experienced in resource mobilization and preparation of donor project reports. Athanase has supervised four PhD candidates and several MSc students and undergraduate students as well as having organized training for groups involved in agroforestry from community-based organizations, farmers’ field school facilitators, field technicians and young people.
