At the start of 2024, the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration team recognized Regreening Africa as a World Restoration Flagship – one of what it calls “the world’s most successful examples of healing the planet.”
The accolade is timely, though the most important work still lies in front of us: with over twenty percent of our planet’s land area degraded to some extent, restoring landscapes has never been more urgent.
Across the African continent – the world’s most affected by degradation – local communities in collaboration with initiatives like Regreening Africa are leading the way. Here, we share some of the key learnings from African restoration projects, including the importance of evidence, incentives, and centring local people’s knowledge and concerns.
