No water without trees:

Forests, agroforestry and rainfed agriculture

One out of every three people worldwide lacks access to safe drinking water. Droughts, flooding and erosion continue to wreak havoc on communities across the planet every week, fuelled by the climate crisis and ongoing deforestation. While no one is immune to these catastrophes, it is, as always, the poorest who are hit hardest.

CIFOR-ICRAF is working to build resilience among vulnerable populations, from smallholder farmers in Africa’s drylands to coastal fishing communities in Indonesia. Research is revealing just how interconnected trees and water are – and how sustainable forest management, agroforestry and wetlands conservation can replenish our watersheds and lower carbon emissions.
