Forests as Safety Nets

How exactly do forests act as safety nets? How many people use these "safety nets"? Do biologically diverse forests provide better safety nets than those which have low diversity? If certain kinds of forests have particularly vital safety net functions, where are they located and how should they be protected? If forests disappear or are not available, are there other means for poor people to manage risks? What strategies are used? How well do they work?
