Ekosistem gambut merupakan suatu ekosistem yang sangat penting perannya dalam mempertahankan kelestarian lingkungan khususnya yang terkait dengan isu pemanasan global. Pada tingkat lokal, ekosistem gambut penting untuk menjaga tata air, sebagai areal produksi tanaman. Namun lahan gambut sangat rapuh dan mudah mengalami degradasi.
