CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Climate analogues for climate change adaptation planning

This document discusses using climate analogues as an alternative approach to modeling climate change impacts. It describes developing a tool to find locations with current climates similar to projected future climates, in order to learn from existing adaptation strategies. The tool calculates climatic distance between sites based on monthly climate variables. Outputs include analogue lists, correspondence plots, and maps showing closest analogue locations under different climate scenarios. The document suggests several potential applications of the climate analogue approach.
