CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Session 5.6 Migrants, land markets & agroforestry: turning the tide with village forest development in Jambi, Indonesia

This document discusses land use, migration, and deforestation pressures in Jambi, Indonesia and strategies to promote sustainable forest management. It notes that 50% of Jambi's population are migrants working in oil palm and pulp plantations, acting as intermediaries and shifting land tenure systems. This has resulted in conflicts over forest lands and clearance. Community-based forest management schemes that provide clear tenure rights could help by promoting sustainable agroforestry livelihoods for locals and maintaining biodiversity, though conflicts between migrants and locals over individual vs. communal rights remain a challenge.
