The Regional Platform for Community Forest Management: Ucayali, Peru

Key messages

  • Although the active participants in this multistakeholder forum (MSF) recognize its key achievements in multisectoral coordination, they do not have a systematic way to monitor its progress and results.
  • The MSF’s continuity, and thus effectiveness, is hampered by changing political inclinations and a lack of financial resources. This makes it dependent on nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) or international cooperation projects.
  • The lack of indigenous community-level stakeholders, especially women, in the MSF should be cause for concern, particularly given women’s central role in community forest management.
  • The limited inclusion of non-Indigenous local actors and of the private sector from the MSF may affect its long-term effectiveness.
