Developing Local Solutions to Clean Water Scarcity in Kakuma-Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement in Kenya (DELOCK)

Developing Local Solutions to Clean Water Scarcity in Kakuma-Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement in Kenya (DELOCK)

Duration: April 2024 - March 2025

Description

Refugee settlements in the arid lands of northern Kenya (e.g. Kakuma-Kalobeyei in Northwestern region and Dadaab in Northeastern region) host over half a million refugees. These heavily overpopulated settlements currently suffer from a severe water scarcity and poor sanitation which have resulted in health crisis in the refuge community . This project aims to co-design and co-develop locally contextualised low cost water/wastewater treatment systems based on biochar-adsorbent filtration for Kakuma-Kalobeyei refugee settlements in Turkana County, Kenya.
