The global momentum behind ecosystem restoration (hereafter restoration) and biodiversity conservation is stronger than ever, driven by a shift in policy incentives and nature finance initiatives aimed at supporting activities that yield tangible environmental and socioeconomic benefits (Fischer et al., 2021, Bodin et al., 2022, Tedesco et al., 2023). While the value of investing in restoration is widely recognized, the economic data behind these efforts remains scarce. Essential cost figures − for restoring a degraded forest, grasslands, invaded landscape, agricultural biodiversity, wetlands, coasts, and marine ecosystem − are not well-documented. Without rigorous field studies and cost-benefit analysis in restoration economics, we risk missing out on vital financial support needed to scale restoration effort globally.
