RPPEG diharapkan dapat menjamin kelestarian fungsi ekosistem gambut untuk sekarang dan masa yang akan datang di Sumatera Selatan. Sumatera Selatan adalah provinsi dengan luasan ekosistem Gambut terluas no. 2 di pulau Sumatera setelah Provinsi Riau. Sayangnya saat ini ekosistem gambut Sumatera Selatan berada dalam kondisi yang membutuhkan upaya pemulihan menyeluruh. Berdasarkan kondisi tersebut, Provinsi Sumatera Selatan masuk sebagai salah satu provinsi prioritas restorasi gambut.
