The paper reviews and discusses criteria and indicators of forest soils while distinguishing the difference between forest soils and other soils. It proposes some indicators of the soil organic matter content as relates to slash-and-burn agriculture and other alternative land uses. It focuses on these indicators and gives a scientific rationale, a suggested protocol for assessment and reviews the data available for interpreting results.
