The 'dark side' of intercropping: manipulation of soil resources

There has been little research on the manipulation of soil resources by both intercropping and agroforestry systems. Both systems emphasize combining N-fixing plants with cereals, but it has been shown that very little direct transfer of N from legumes to cereals occurs. In hedgerow intercropping, large amounts of prunings are added as green manure to the soil. The effects of tree prunings on erosion control, soil physical changes and soil moisture retention are discussed.
