Traditional hedges in western Kenya: typology, composition, distribution, uses, productivity and tenure

The paper presents a study undertaken in Western Kenya to identify the different types of hedges, their composition, distribution, uses standing biomass and productivity, and the biophysical and socio cultural factors influencing their existence and dynamism. Findings from three separate field surveys on indigenous hedges in Vihiga and Siaya Districts in Western Kenya are discussed.
