The alternatives to slash-and-burn (ASB) programme was developed to address global problems caused by shifting cultivation, which include climatic change and loss of biodiversity; while tackling local issues such as poverty reduction, and increase of household food security. This article explains how policy research plays a key role in determining which alternatives should be considered and when in connection with farming in the upland areas of South East Asia
