Valeur nutritive de Balanites aegyptiaca pour l'alimentation des ruminants

This study was undertaken to evaluate the forage potential of Balanites aegyptiaca, one the shrubs that can provide edible forage for domestic and wild herbivores during the dry season. Results showed that this plant offers edible forage over the entire year, even though compositional variations have been observed according the seasons. Total protein contents were highest for young leaves (223g/kgDM). The raining season allows higher protein content. Digestibility values over the entire production cycle, ranged from 53.0 to 64.0% for dry matter, from 58.0 to 70.0% for organic matter and from 64.0 to 79.0% for total nitrogen. An average daily gain of 116 g per day was attained by sheep fed a ration containing 60% Balanites aegyptiaca and 40% Pennisetum pedicellatum hay at 70g DM/kg BW0.75. Balanites aegyptiaca leaves are good complements to graminae forages in rations for ruminants when the plant is in the stage of sprouting new leaves and new fruits
