this paper examines the prifitability of rotational woodlot technology and factors influencing its adoption by farmer's in shinyanga region and contrasts with tah in Tabora region Tanzania. Two surveys were conducted in nine villages involving 110 farmers' management of rotational woodlots and their perceptions on the technology and to identify factors limiting its adoption. Economic data collected at shinyanga were used to estimate profitability of rotational woodlots under two management situations. Despite high expenses for labor and cash in the first year of establishment woodlots under two management situations. Despite high expenses for labor and cash in the first year of establishment woodlots at the end of a 5 year cycle gave susbstantialy greater returns than the farmers' practice of cropping continous maize.
