CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Soil-atmosphere gas exchange in tropical agriculture: contributions to climate change

Several concepts relevant to greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide nitrogen oxides and methane) and the role of atmospheric gases in producing the greenhouse effect are reviewed. The basic contributions of agricultural soils to atmospheric greenhouse gas loading are also reviewed focusing on the effects of land use and agricultural management (viz. natural vegetation biomass burning pasture formation row crops and rice production and agroforestry systems). Finally the effects of combined organic and inorganic nitrogen applications on nitrous oxide emission are discussed.
