The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) envision a more equitable world where trees in all landscapes, from drylands to the humid tropics, enhance the environment and well-being for all. Overview


CIFOR-ICRAF and the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) are expanding its capacity development and educational activities through its newly developed Digital Campus, a dedicated learning experience center with abilities for offline, online and blended courses, social learning, community engagement, collaborative course design and content management to support a global community of learners to manage our planet’s landscapes, forests and biodiversity.

CIFOR-ICRAF-GLF is looking for experienced learning and instructional designers to contribute to our international team. Consultants, freelancers or organizations will create and deliver engaging online and blended learning experiences, namely courses and resources including guides, toolkits, and blogs, hosted on the Digital Campus. Candidates with expertise in sustainable landscapes and livelihoods, climate change, biodiversity conservation, and food system transformation are preferred.

Any individual or organization, either profit or non-profit, are invited to apply. We encourage applicants to share key pieces from their portfolio that showcase their approach to learning design, especially examples related to curriculum development, learner-centered design, or collaboration with subject matter experts.



Duties and responsibilities


Needs analysis and learning objectives:

  • Conduct needs analysis working with subject matter experts to identify the target audience, learning gaps and the desired competencies.
  • Define clear, measurable, and competence-based learning objectives, applying relevant learning theories to enhance learning.
  • Analyze the learning context considering available technology, language, time constraints and access.

Curriculum content design:

  • Develop a comprehensive curriculum outlining modules, topics, activities and formats. Consult with subject matter experts.
  • Facilitate a collaborative process with subject matter experts to design engaging and interactive materials and content (writing lessons, scripts, case-studies, visual design, scripting videos).
  • Select and integrate appropriate learning technologies, aligned with the software of the Digital Campus and structure content for optimal learning (instructional design models).
  • As needed, design for blending online and offline activities. 

Activity and assessment design:

  • Design interactive learning activities (discussions, peer learning, quizzes, assignments).
  • Develop assessments to measure competency.
  • Integrate formative and summative assessments to measure learner’s progress and feedback.

Course delivery:

  • Pilot test the learning experience with a small group of learners, and update accordingly.
  • Provide learner support and facilitate a supportive learning community.

Evaluation and upgrades:

  • Use surveys, interviews and analytics to collect and analyze learner feedback in evaluation reports.
  • Analyze the formative and summative assessment and manage the certification process.
  • Use evaluation data and learner feedback to iterate and improve the learning experience.
  • Maintain detailed records of the design process.

Facilitate engagement on the Digital Campus:

  • Work with project members and partners to develop and maintain dashboards, group pages, community engagement, discussions, course pages, event calendars and other available features on the Digital Campus.
  • Develop learning support systems for online and in-person training, workshops and webinars, while curating resources and content on the Digital Campus.



Education, knowledge and experience


• Excellent understanding of principles of pedagogy for sustainable development and adult education and having experience with online learning design and learning management systems.
• Experience with instructional design models (ADDIE, SAMR, backward design).
• Minimum 3 years of experience in leading instructional design, or an undergraduate degree in instructional design, pedagogy or a related field; Understanding of WordPress CMS and data management systems or an undergraduate degree in instructional design, pedagogy or a related field.
• Fluent in English. French or Spanish speaker is desirable.

Terms and conditions


• This is a consultancy position.
• The period of the consultancy is 1st July 2025 – 1st July 2026 with possibility to renew subject to performance and funding.
