CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Addressing knowledge and implementation gaps on agroecological transitions: A way forward for research and development through the Transformative Partnership Platform

Side event at the 48th Plenary of the Committee on Food Security (CFS)

This CFS side event will launch the Agroecology Transformative Partnership Platform (TPP) and discuss pathways for the implementation of the CFS agenda on agroecology and other innovations in food security and nutrition.

Agroecology is a farming approach that is inspired by natural ecosystems, combines local and scientific knowledge, and focuses on the interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environmnet. Given the outsize contributions of conventional agriculture to climate change and biodiversity loss, there is growing recognition the global food system needs a paradigm shift in order to feed the world without destroying the planet. Agroecological principles are increasingly being considered critical to creating that change.

A range of institutions that already partner in an ad-hoc fashion came together within a holistic Transformative Partnership Platform (TPP) on Agroecological Approaches to building resilience of livelihoods and landscapes. The TPP aims at accelerating and co-ordinating work of member partners on agroecology across international, national and local scales, with the aim of fostering and scaling-up transitions to more sustainable agricultural and food systems. The TPP works in a demand driven-modality, to address a range of key knowledge and implementation gaps and priority issues emerging from locally articulated needs. This involves working in new ways, bringing together various actors through transdisciplinary science and the co-creation of knowledge. The side-event will aim at sharing information on on-going initiatives under the TPP, including a French-funded initiative on evidencing socio-economic viability and farmer adoption of agroecological practices across Africa, at getting perspectives of CFS members and participants on potential priority areas of work for the TPP, and at triggering interest of countries, civil society, private sector for the work of the TPP.

This side event is fully aligned with the CFS agenda and recommendations coming from the HLPE report and voluntary implementation of the CFS policy convergence process on agroecology and other innovations for food security and nutrition. The event will officially launch a concrete research and development initiative, set up as a response from key partners to the agenda set by the CFS, with initial funding from France. The TPP modalities of work and initiatives under it will align to the principles of the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) on Food Security and Nutrition report on agroecology. Perspectives from CFS participants are key to develop further the workplan of the TPP.
