Advancing the sustainable wildlife management for people, nature and positive livelihood outcomes

Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) is a cornerstone in the realm of biodiversity conservation. It not only contributes to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals but remains acutely pertinent to the Kunming-Montreal Global Targets Biodiversity Framework, particularly underscoring the significance of Targets 4, 5, and 9. Despite its vital role, SWM faces mounting challenges in light of burgeoning human populations, technological advancements, and the increasing commercial trade, both domestically and internationally, in and unsustainable use of wild species.
In this side event, we will describe the early work of CPW – and particularly the development of the Voluntary Guidance for a Sustainable Wild Meat Sector adopted at CBD/COP/DEC/14/7. CPW is highlighted in CBD/SBSTTA/25/11 as having a key role to play in identifying other areas beyond the wild meat sector that might require complementary guidance, such as other geographical areas, species and uses, aligning with the directives of the adopted COP15/23 decision and the insights garnered during SBSTTA 25 deliberations.
Beyond this, CPW has now developed a new work plan for 2023-2025 and we will launch this at the event and provide some highlights of some of the key activities included within it.
