From June 21 to 23, 2006, ICRAF, with the support of AED and funding from USAID, hosted a Seed Dealers Works hop. The workshop was attended by more than 30 individuals and facilitated by KEFRI resource staff, agribusiness and micro-finance experts, and ICRAF staff. The objective of the workshop was to build the technical capacity of seed dealers in seed technologies and entrepreneurial skills. The workshop also provided a venue to develop and strengthen the linkages among the seed dealers and between the seed dealers and buyers of fodder planting materials. The facilitators and participants identified entrepreneurial skills as the main force behind success in business. The facilitators emphasized that for seed dealers to be successful, they need to have a vision and mission along with attainable goals and objectives. Entrepreneurship in the seed business involves creating, organizing, and managing the seed business; one aspect requires that proper business records are maintained. The SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) analysis in business was identified as an important tool in developing business strategies. Also, participants discussed the need to separate business and family needs as a prerequisite to survival in business.
