Stefan Uhlenbrook

Dr. Stefan Uhlenbrook is the Program Director for the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and is an ex officio member of the WLE steering committee. He is also the Strategic Program Director – Water, Food & Ecosystems for the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

Dr. Uhlenbrook’s expertise includes water resources, hydrological processes, agricultural water management, global change, sustainability, SDGs, nature-based solutions, ecosystems, achieving outcomes for sustainable development and leadership of multi-disciplinary teams bridging science, practice and policy. He was formerly Coordinator of the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) and Director of UNESCO Programme Office on Global Water Assessment, Perugia, Italy, Deputy Director and Officer-in-Charge (Acting Director) of UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (now IHE-Delft), Delft, Netherlands.

Many of his research and development projects have demonstrated the impact of global changes on water cycle dynamics in different hydro-climatic regions worldwide, and they provided solutions to address these challenges. Dr. Uhlenbrook is also experienced in translating science-based knowledge to effective policies and strategies that contribute to environmental, economic and societal sustainability.
