Science Policy Dialogue VI

Promote forest protection and the rights of forest peoples in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Promote forest protection and the rights of forest peoples in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

14-15 March 2024, Kempinski Fleuve Congo Hotel ,119 Bd Colonel Tshatshi, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo

In response to the deforestation and degradation threatening its forests, the DRC committed to REDD+ in 2009, some 15 years ago. It has ratified and is implementing numerous international agreements and resolutions framing the fight against climate change, notably the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, the Agenda 2030.

In two days of exchanges and reflections, this dialogue will address the impacts of mining on the lives of populations and climate justice; the assessment of forest conservation, peatlands and deforestation in armed conflict zones; the political network, future policies and projects on forests and REDD+; and the regulation of carbon credit and the expectations of local communities in relation to the carbon market.

The wealth of topics and the diversity and contributions of the participants will make this scientific and political dialogue a special opportunity to share experience and knowledge on forests and climate in the DRC, fresh from the elections and before the installation of the first post-election government. These exchanges and reflections will undoubtedly benefit both future decision-makers and all stakeholders influencing the forest and climate sector.

Objectives of the scientific and policy dialogue

This scientific and political dialogue has two objectives:

  1. To present the results of the CIFOR-UNIKIN project on forest protection and the promotion of forest peoples’ rights in the DRC with decision-makers and stakeholders in order to provide them with knowledge and tools for effective decision-making and participation in the forest and climate sector;
  2. Exchange views on the major challenges facing the forestry and climate sector in the DRC in this post-electoral period and before the installation of a new government.
